 PRESIDENTS BLOG

Connect and Inspire is the club motto for this year.  You will have seen how we have used the President’s Guest as an opportunity to reach out to various other organisations in the community and get their leaders to come and see how Rotary operates.  This has been an eye-opener for many of them and has helped break down prejudices that they had against Rotary.  It is my firm belief that unless we make Rotary relevant in the community, that Rotary (and many other service organisations) will die.

But making Rotary relevant in the community goes much further than putting our logos on cars and infrastructure.  It means being prepared, as an organisation, to stand up and be counted when it matters.  It means a lot more than giving money, it means giving leadership.  Rotary is a fantastic organisation to work in for those who want to enhance and grow their leadership skills.  I hope to bring this home to the Friends of Rotary when we start meeting on a regular basis.  Helping yourself and helping the community at the same time can be a key learning experience in Rotary.

Connect and inspire also applies to ourselves as Rotarians.  It is important that we meet together, under lots of different circumstances, to deepen our friendships with each other.  Recent research shows that it is not games and puzzles that keeps our minds active as we get older; but rather personal interactions.  We have planned the program so that the warm weather has us out doing things together.  There was a lot of feedback from members at the Visioning Workshop about the importance of friendship amongst Rotarians.  The summer months will test how firm this desire is.  Active and engaged people live longer ….  Join Rotary and get a longer life for free!
ROTARY FOUNDATION DINNERS

The first set of TRF dinners will take place on Saturday November 25th with eight couples currently listed to participate, including hosts Derek & Marg Bulman, Keith & Heather McIntosh and Joan & Monica. The dinner cost to guests is $45/person and hosts pay $30/person.

Further participants can still join in on this date - just contact Joan if you would like to be added as a host or a guest.  But if this week doesn't suit you, don't worry - there will be further dates later in the year.

Rotary Foundation Art Auction
Rotarians will no doubt have seen our ads in the Mirror and Mountain Scene asking for paintings to be submitted for our proposed art auction next Autumn.  We would encourage members to bring these ads to the attention of any friends or family who might be interested in having a painting sold on a commission basis.  And of course if any members themselves would like to have any art sold, please contact Brian Macpherson or Joan Kiernan.

Meals on Wheels Volunteers Thanks
Hello to Our Groups who Volunteer to drive and deliver for Meals on Wheels.

Reminder to of the Club who have helped so very much delivering Meals on Wheels this year - that we will be having a Morning Tea at Hamill's Coffee Shop at Remarkable Park on Wednesday 22nd November at 10.30 am.  All drivers welcome.  This is to thank all the drivers and have a catch up with our amazing volunteers.

Thank you all so very much for helping to deliver Meals on Wheels doing either the Queenstown Run or the Arrowtown Run.  (often both!)  This service would not be possible without you.

2017 Plunket Garden Tour

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

We are looking for volunteers for the annual Plunket Garden Tour event coming up on Sunday, 10 December.  This is our largest fundraising event of the year and it can only happen when wonderful people like yourself are happy to get involved!  This year’s tour is shaping up to be bigger and better than ever - with new gardens, new events and an exciting new location for the afternoon tea!  We are looking for over 30 Garden Ambassadors who would be willing to volunteer a few hours of their time to help with the below shifts on the day:

          9:30 am - 12:30 pm – Morning Garden Ambassadors

          12:30 - 3:30 pm – Afternoon Garden Ambassadors

If you are available for either of the above shifts on the 10th December, please let me know ASAP and we can assign you a gorgeous garden to help with during the tour! We are also planning a Volunteer Appreciation/Information Evening on Wednesday, 6 December from 7 - 8 pm at the Queenstown Plunket Rooms, where you will be briefed on everything you need to know about the garden tour as well as enjoying nibbles, bubbles and a few raffle prizes to show our appreciation of you being involved in this year’s Garden Tour!  Attendance on Thursday evening isn’t mandatory, but is highly recommended.

As a volunteer you will also be welcome to visit the other gardens on the day, either during the morning or afternoon (depending on your shift), at no charge.  Please let us know if you are able to help Plunket with this exciting event and thanks in advance for helping us make the tour bigger and better than ever!

Thank you in advance.

Movie Night - Murder on the Orient Express
Thanks to Rotarians and friends, we managed to fill the Reading Cinema for the screening of Murder on the Orient Express. Not only was the cause - End Polio Now - an excellent one, but the movie was very enjoyable.  Between ticket sales and donations, we cleared $805, which is well on the way to our Polio objective of $1,075 for the year.  When matched by the Gates Foundation, the movie evening will have gained $2,415 for what we hope will be the final stages of the eradication of polio from the world.

DISTRICT GRANTS
The District paid over this year's District Grants this week so we now have $2,000 in the bank awaiting the Happiness House move to their new location next year.
