PRESIDENTS BLOG

One of the revelations that has hit me very hard since the introduction of our “Connect and Inspire” campaign is how much Queenstown has changed and continues to change.

I was blown away by the fact that the Mountain Biking Club has so many members and has such a big turnout for their trail digs and upkeep.  These are the kind of people who would have been Rotarians in years gone by.

Baskets of Blessings does an amazing job filling a real need in the community.  These are also the kind of people who would have been in Rotary in years gone by.

But the world has changed, and how people choose to spend their available volunteer hours has too.  In his presentation to the Club several weeks ago, Joel Peasey from the Wakatipu Youth Trust shared with us some of the challenges they face in getting volunteers.  Rotary is not alone by any means in facing these challenges, but Joel made some very interesting points about how volunteer roles could be organised in non-traditional ways.

Maybe we need to break down the job requirements and ask people to make a less time-consuming but more focused commitment to a particular task.

What kind of projects appeal to people?  Maybe different projects appeal to people at different stages of their lives.  Maybe the younger we are the more we want energetic projects that we can really get our teeth into … maybe as we get older our focus is on friendship and fellowship.  Maybe as Rotary we need to be more flexible in the options we offer, allowing people to choose whether they want to spend time only on specific projects, or whether they would like the fellowship offered by full involvement.  I would hope that our loosely formed Friends of Rotary group will allow us to experiment with some of these ideas.

I don’t know the answer to these questions ... my job is just to raise the questions and try to find some solutions that will help us advance.  This is why we have to try many different approaches with the same key underlying objective - to make sure that no matter how much our Community changes around us, Rotary changes enough to remain relevant.
Welcome to Karen Dennis
At our 5 December meeting, President Monica inducted new member Karen Dennis into our club.  Welcome Karen!

CHRISTMAS FUNCTION
A great night was enjoyed by all at Britannia restaurant.

During the evening Past President Steve McLean presented a Paul Harris Fellow award to member Pat Jefford.

Bruce Jefford provided a verbal update on the new Queenstown Community Patrol and also recognised Rotarian Neil Dempsey for his generosity in donating a defibrillator for the Community Patrol vehicle.

Lex Perkins advised that their long holiday is now over and that they have sold their campervan and purchased a property at Invercargill.  He is arranging to transfer to the Invercargill Sun Rise Club.

On a more sombre note, the gathering paused for a moment of silence as a Mark of Respect to Rotarian Bevin Campbell who recently passed away in Christchrch and who had been a member of Queenstown Rotary since June 1994.

PRESIDENT NOMINEE SELECTED

We are delighted that Ross Beal has agreed to be our current Presidential Nominee and our Club President for 2019-20.

Ross has been a member of Queenstown Rotary for approximately a year having earlier served in the Invercargill South club for 11 years.  He has acted in the capacity of our Secretary for periods during Chris Taylor’s absence.

Ross has served all of his working life in the electrical industry.  Apart from having his own business and managing several others, Ross has served as a Director of ‘The Skills’ organisation, a large Industry Training Organisation (ITO) in N.Z. serving the electrical industry, and is currently serving as a Director on the Board of N.Z. Master Electricians.  He is also a director of a large electrical company in Southland.

Ross has also served ‘Cycling Southland’ including leading the organisation as its Chair through substantial change (1997 to 1999).

Of note Ross, and his wife Rosanna, have their own children’s charity “The Fountain of Peace Children’s Foundation N.Z.”  Their charity is supporting the health and education of village children in a part of Uganda, including building homes.

Ross and Rosanna have 2 grown up daughters.

We look forward to Ross’s leadership during 2019-20.

KAWARAU BRIDGE OPENING
Rotarians assisted bridge contractors McConnell Dowell in parking vehicles for the 3000 people that walked the new bridge after its official opening last Sunday morning.  Thanks to Ron and Ann Mackersy, Russell McGrouther and Ashley Adams for their contribution.

GOODBYE 2017 AND WELCOME 2018
Our first meeting for 2018 will consist of a walk around the Golf Club Peninsula Track and a BBQ at the Wakatipu Yacht Club on Tuesday 16th January.  This will be a PARTNERS NIGHT.  We look forward to seeing you all then.
