PRESIDENT'S BLOG
We have just been through a very busy period of fundraising events. Thank you to all that participated in the Queenstown Home Show, the NZ Open Golf BBQ’s and most recently at the Queenstown Wine & Food Festival. It has been our busiest time of the year and great to see the team work and have fun working together.
Thank you also to those that completed the two surveys on’ Survey Monkey’ who those that attended the Club Visioning Workshop on the 12th. The Club Visioning Group and the Board will take all feedback, from the surveys and the workshop, into account as we plan our future and move to recruit new members. The surveys haven’t been closed off yet so please complete them if you haven’t already done so. A special thanks to George Carver (NRG) for setting up the surveys.
It was great to welcome Steve Fraser into Rotary and inducted into our club by PDG Derek Bulman. A warm welcome to Ross Beal also. Ross was earlier a member of Invercargill South and has re-joined Rotary after several years away.
Last night our Rotary National Science Fair students, Olivia Ray and Connor Kennedy, attend our meeting along with their Mum’s and ‘Mayoress’ Karen Boult in support. Olivia and Connor spoke to us about their Rotary National Science Forum experience, in Auckland in January, and what it has meant to them. This, and their extraordinary success at being chosen to attend the International Youth Science Fair in London in July, will certainly open doors for them for their future careers. Very rewarding and satisfying to us having made this possible for them. Thanks to Richard Muth (NRG) for his role (Youth) in making this happen for us.
FOUNDATION FUNDRAISING OPPORTUNITY: We have the chance to raise $600 by hosting 12 Australian Rotarians for dinner on Sunday 9th April. Organiser Kerry Dunlop suggests that a member hosts one Australian couple and also invites a club member and partner who can bring dessert and a bottle of wine. Currently, the Dunlops, McIntoshes and Chappells are hosting so we just need 3 more hosts. These evenings can be great fun so please email Kerry if you can take part. kerry.dunlop@farmside.co.nz
Tuesday 14th March was a great night with a combined meeting of the Lions and Rotary Clubs. We were also delighted to have some Inner Wheel guests. The highlight of the evening was when Lions member Simon Hayes was presented with a Paul Harris Fellowship by our club for his services to the community. Congratulations Simon. Well deserved.
A debate was held between the two clubs, the topic being "Wanaka doesn't want to be like Queenstown so should we set them adrift?" The Lions team of Simon Hayes, Peter Doyle and Michael White took the affirmative and the Rotary team of Bruce Boivin, Bob Craigie and Stuart Maclean took the negative. The adjudicator "Ferg" Ferguson was heavily biased as Lion Peter Doyle blatantly kept reinforcing the fact that the two of them were mates and the Lions had a resounding victory. It was all good fun and well worth repeating.
Cliff joined Queenstown Rotary in 1999 from Invercargill, where had been awarded two Paul Harris Fellowships. The Queenstown Club made him an Honarary Member when he moved back to Invercargill. Known for his love of tramping and his philanthropy, Cliff was a well-known Southland businessman/accountant who was one of the founders of Skyline Tours in 1963 which went on to become Skyline Enterprises. We will miss his wonderful smile and sharp brain. Our thoughts go out to Cliff's family.
As leaders in our community, Catalyst Trust and Jigsaw Central Otago would like to invite you to take part in our upcoming community workshop “Family and Sexual Violence – Yes It Does Happen Here Too”.
We are capitalising on having experts in town for what is believed to be the first national Family and Sexual Violence Conference, being organised by Jigsaw, to shed light on this largely hidden and ignored topic. Perhaps even more hidden in a resort town where glitz is prevalent and family connections less common.
It will be held on Thursday, April 20, 7-9pm in Queenstown Memorial Centre. The evening will start with our panel of nationally renowned speakers – Louise Nicholas, Ken Clearwater, Nicola Atwool and Rachel Smith. If you would like to read more about them, please see the Catalyst website. We will then have an opportunity for Q&A before roundtable discussion of possible approaches for our community.
