PRESIDENT'S BLOG
Rotary means a lot of things to different people.  My preferred vision (and one which I think really appeals to younger people) is:

“Rotary is an organisation which brings together, in fellowship, leaders from business, politics, religion, not-for-profits etc to solve local problems.  We do so by using our leadership and organisational skills to benefit the community.  This helps us enhance and grow our skills, build the community and makes us better leaders and role models.”

It is my view that a strategy such as this is the best way of ensuring our future.  So it is very disappointing when we have a classic leadership problem - the sustainability of Meals on Wheels - and we do not have a Rotary Champion putting themselves forward to solve this issue.  Meals on Wheels is a key component in the quality of life for many of our older community members.  It is currently dependent on organisations, such as Rotary, who are aging and are more likely (as time goes on) to be in need of Meals on Wheels than to be the deliverers of same!

Our motto for this year is:  “connect and inspire”, and people are inspired by stories of problem solving.  In my opinion, it is not tagging things with the Rotary symbol that inspires people; but the telling of stories of how we used our skills to solve real life problems that inspires people.  If we do not create our own success stories and just live off the stories of an earlier generation, then we are just pygmies walking in the footprints of giants.  We need to develop new success stories for today.  Solving the sustainability issues of Meals on Wheels, would be great feather in our cap!

Following on the theme of “connect and inspire”, it is also disappointing that not only have we not connected with our own adult children and inspired them to join Rotary; we have not even been able to inspire them to fill out a form to tell us why they will not join Rotary.  This is not inspiring for the future of the organisation as it currently exists.  So far, we have only had 6 respondents.  To be fair, the quality of these responses have been very good and we have learned valuable information for our marketing campaigns from these responses.  However, it would be great to have some more.

The Presidential Elect Committee will be meeting in the next month to discuss the nomination of a new President Nominee.  Currently, we do not have anybody who has put themselves forward.  If you are interested in expanding your leadership skills and taking on a new challenge, please contact Russell or myself.

CHAMPIONS NEEDED
Currently, we are in need of champions for the following projects:

Meals on Wheels (see President’s Blog) to help organise getting Meals on Wheels onto a more sustainable footing.

Daffodil Day:  Somebody to organise the roster for August 25th outside Wilkinson’s Pharmacy.

Arthritis New Zealand:  A Champion to organise the collection and roster etc.

SURVEY OF ROTARIANS' ADULT CHILDREN
This survey (see the link below to the survey - just send the link to your adult children and ask them to fill it in) has only been completed by 6 people. However, the quality of the answers has been very useful. They know that their parents have had a lot of satisfaction and networking opportunities from their Rotary connection. They are fully aware of the benefits of being a Rotarian. We really do need to work on their objections to joining. From what little information we have, the key objections are: the requirement to attend weekly (this is no longer the case!), the fact that the club is all male, the lack of age diversity in the club, the time requirement to being a Rotarian, the outdated formalities.

Please ask your adult children to help us get Rotary to the next level by filling out this form. It can be done anonymously.

Request from Pia Woitscheck
Hi Monica, my name is Pia and I was a Rotary youth exchange student in 2012.  My sponsoring club was the RC Stade in District 1890 in Northern Germany and I was hosted by the Rotary Club Dingley Village in District 9810 in Australia.  Earlier this year I visited my friends and host families in Melbourne.  I have just finished my second year at university studying a bachelors degree in tourism management.  Due to this course I have to do an internship for at least 20 weeks.  I was really lucky and got an internship in Queenstown for Peterpans Adventure Travel starting at the start of September this year.  I am in a Facebook group looking for a room to rent somewhere near town or at least close to a bus stop which will take me to town.  Unfortunately, I was not lucky with finding a room so far and hardly got any replies.  Guess it is quite hard to find a room when you are still on the other side of the world.  Especially if you don't know anyone over there.  Now I was wondering if maybe some Rotarian from your club has a place to sleep for a few days until I have hopefully found a proper place to live for the whole duration in Queenstown.  Even if someone could give me an advice where I could find a room which isn't either way to expensive or a room with a shared bed with a stranger.  I know how trustworthy Rotarians are and that Rotary is an amazing community with people who are always willing to help.  Of course I would also pay an amount of rent and will be responsible for my own needs and food.  Even if there won't be a place to stay for me for a bit I would still like to come to a Rotary meeting in Queenstown.  Maybe we can arrange a date once I arrive.  I am looking forward to hearing from you!  Best regards Pia.

Our  Duck Race on 25 June saw good turnout of supporting Rotarians that resulted in a smooth running event including assisting ducks that became wedged in overhanging vegetation along the sides of Horne Creek. 30 ducks, of which 25 were paid for in cash and 5 were paid for in prizes, competed in the main race and numerous others in the smaller race. We will have netted some $6,000 for our charities - Queenstown Coastguard and Happiness House (to assist with their move of premises).

The winner of the main race was Scenic Suites. Manager Ramon is pictured below holding their prize – a voucher for a 4 person round of golf at Millbrook.

The winner of the best dressed duck prize was Pinewood Lodge.

We are grateful to the numerous sponsors that contributed to making this event happen and to our Rotary organisers, Joan Kiernan and Ron Mackersy, we all as everybody who helped out on the day
