PRESIDENT'S BLOG
The year got off to a fantastic start with a much commented on evening at Wild Thyme.  The food was good, the service was great and everybody seemed to enjoy themselves.

On the business side, the Constitution and By-Laws were passed by the AGM on 13th June, so we start the year with a clean sheet - a good place to start!

I have taken advantage of the new rules which require us to only meet once a fortnight to cancel some meetings in July and August when many members are away for the winter.  If the experiment is successful, we may well extend it.  Inner Wheel only meet once a month and their club has more members than ours!

I have had good follow up on the call for members to put themselves forward for the various committees:  the PHF committee, the President Elect Committee and the Charitable Trust.  If you have not thought about putting your name forward for one of these committees, then now is a good time to do that.  We do need to get to a situation where the club is not depending on just a handful of people... we all need to pull our weight, especially as our numbers dwindle.  I would like some more nominations for the PHF committee and for the Charitable Trust.

We also would like expressions of interest in the position of President nominee; this will be the president following Russell.  As is usual with Rotary, extensive training is given and you will be fully supported by past presidents.  There is no required amount of experience or knowledge of Rotary required.  If we do not get nominations, we may be reduced to recycling a past president... that would be a real failure for the health of the club.  Now is the time to step up to the plate.

Ross has sent out the link to the forms to be sent to your adult offspring.  They have valuable information that we need to capture.  So far, we have only had three replies and each of them has provided very valuable information.  Please remind your offspring to fill out the forms as we need a lot more replies to really get a feel for the objections to joining Rotary.

We will be putting a lot of emphasis this year on connecting with Friends of Rotary and asking them to join us on our various outings/projects.  Please pass on the email of anybody who might be interested in being a Friend of Rotary.

Thanks to all who attended the changeover and made it a very memorable occasion for Joan and me.

    Please Note:
    • More adult children of Rotary need to respond.  Those that have responded gave us very useful information for our recruitment strategy.
    • Everybody is responsible for the event program this year.  There are no speaker seekers or social organisers… the various projects are the program... please make sure you get yours done early... we have a full program out as far as end of August... things are looking shaky after then until people start their projects rolling.
    • Please submit names and email addresses for the Friends of Rotary Program to Keith or David Carter.

LETTER FROM MEALS ON WHEELS ORGANISER
    Good Morning Monica

It was wonderful to talk to you this morning about my concerns for the future of Wakatipu Meals on Wheels.

I have serious concerns about how it will continue to run with the following issues:

    • Without the other Voluntary groups such as Rotary, Lions, Arrowtown Village Association, Ladies Bowling Groups etc I would not be able to full the Roaster with drivers.
    • Many of the drivers who could voluntary in the past - young mothers at home - now work full time so that part of the community are not available.
    • The aging population in our area who will in the near future be unable to deliver for Meals on wheels - and be part of the many other organisations in the district that also deliver to Meals on Wheel.
    • The very high cost of the TAXIS that are rung when a volunteer forgets to deliver :(last bill was an Arrowtown run of 9 meals $92.40.) Meals on Wheels receives  45 cents per meal delivered.. so we receive about $180 per month which is 2 taxis!!
    • The fact that especially during the busy Winter and Summer months the traffic in Queenstown does not flow smoothly and thus the driving can be stressful.
    • Queenstown has a very transient population with many Volunteers   only being able to commit for a few months and then they have left Queenstown and I need to find and recruit  new members again - this is very time consuming.
    • The fact that many of our permanent   Volunteers are getting older - and they leave for the Winter Months to warmer weather (a great idea).
    • The most immediate fact is that I am out of the Country (building and designing new schools in CAMBODIA (Cambodia2017 Give A Little) so therefore I have not got the time to find new drivers.
All these concerns are very real. I love the idea of Meals on Wheels continuing but feel very concerned about its future.

Thanks for taking the time to look at and discuss these issues (and hopefully coming up with great ideas to save Wakatipu Meals on Wheels)

    Regards
    Julie Carlaw-Hillary
