 PRESIDENTS BLOG

There seems to be anxiety by some members, as to why we do not have a Club Services Director this year.  Here is my reasoning:
  1. Age.  The increasing age of our members is making it harder to get members to commit to activities that raise relatively smaller funds.  This is increasingly more difficult as our membership has fallen from 60 to 40 and, as we get older, it will potentially get even worse.  Last year, Bruce worked extremely hard to get people along to our arduous fundraising activities.  In any event, younger people (prospective members) are less likely to want to join Rotary to do these more arduous fundraisers ... they want something more 'sexy' and 'exciting'.
  2. Money - we raise and distribute about $30,000 each year.  So, in our Charitable Trust we have about 15 years worth of distributions.  We should use some of this money to buy us time to find new avenues of fundraising which are 'smarter' rather than pursuing the ones that will inevitably get harder and harder to do.  We are on a losing curve if we keep to the old ways of doing things.  Smarter not harder is the way that we need to go.
  3. Time - despite some people being anxious that we do not have a Services Director for 1 year, or if we do not carry out these projects for a year, the opposite is true.  It makes no difference.  By experimenting with new ideas (as we are doing this year) we can experiment our way to success.  If it does not work then we can go back to the previous ways of fundraising.
  4. Fellowship:  Yes there is indeed some fellowship to be had in our traditional projects and there is a certain amount of camaraderie to be gained … but that does not mean that any new projects we come up with will be without socialising and friendship ... let's try and wait and see !
  5. Smarter Projects:  We feel that, in the "AdEaters" concept, we have come up with a project that will get (in one hit) the same amount of money with much less arduous effort.  This is a project which will get our name in front of young people and will associate Rotary with cutting edge ideas!  It will involve a large number of club members on the night but will require less in planning etc.  What is even more important, it is our own project ... we are in charge.  What is not to like about that?

So, let's put this one to rest until next year.

Partner's Night - 12 September

Unfortunately our planned Guest Speaker, Alison Broad, was unable to be with us to tell us about Women’s Self Defence.  The evening was quickly turned around to a very enjoyable Trivia Night led by Ashley Adams.  A great night had by all.  The winning team were presented with a Gold Cup and the team who achieved the lowest points were duly decorated with suitable medals.  It is great the talent that we have within the club to string together such entertainment at very, very short notice.

Thanks Ashley.

Fountain of Peace Children's Foundation
Ross Beal provided our Club a very interesting and Heart Rendering Presentation about the Fountain of Peace Children’s Foundation in Uganda that he and his wife Rosanna are involved with and have been for several years.
The Vision of The Fountain of Peace Children’s Foundation is to provide Centre’s of Hope and a Transformation for Orphaned and Abandoned Children.
So, they have created Family based Homes within a Rural Village Community for these lucky few Children in Uganda who are disparately in need of being loved.
Their work involves constructing Bungalows where these Children who have suffered Abandonment, Starvation and Hunger, Neglect and Poverty, can now live within this Village Community with House Mother’s to care for them.
Foundation of Peace is providing clean Water, Education, Health Care and the appropriate Medical Intervention when needed.
It is a Christian Charity where the Children are brought up to know about Jesus Christ and the love of God, by seeking to make a difference now and in the future, generating hope and transformation to all those who will benefit from it, regardless of race, religion, class, gender or age.
Ross and Rosanna are about to go back to Uganda for their 4th & 5th working visits respectively, and to continue their wonderful help and devotion that they have given to this Charity for which it gave me great pleasure in thanking them after their Presentation at our Meeting which was held at the Remarkables Primary School on the 5th September 2017.

Coastguard Queenstown
At our meeting on 29 August we heard from Tim Buckley and Andy McLeod on the development and operations of the Coast Guard Organisation in Queenstown.  They are currently in the process of constructing their proposed Headquarters at the Frankton Marina.
President Elect Russell McGrouther presented to them a cheque for $4,000 being part of the Duck Race Proceeds.  Rotary are also currently looking at how we can assist Queenstown Coastguard in constructing their proposed Headquarters.
